Train Roof Access Wi-Fi Antenna Installation

22nd February 2017

London Underground once again came to us to ask for a solution and design to aid the safe installation of antennas on carriage roofs.

As is often the case there was twist, as the positioning of the antennas were at the crown and at the end of the carriage. This would mean that a platform passing over the train roof would be too far above where the work was taking place, and a boxing ring type platform that allows working on the train would mean kneeling to carry out the work.

So the solution was to design and manufacture a split level platform, with a platform over the top of the roof and a narrow platform passing between the carriages. This allows engineers to sit on the higher platform and then rest their feet on the platform passing between the carriages, with the latter also closing off any fall hazard between the carriages, with the outcome being a total success!

Note that this also had to be made completely from GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) to ensure it was insulated for use in a live environment.
