Rail Pit Boards - With a Difference

We were recently approached by a train operating company to design pits boards that have fold-down guardrails, that could be easily deployed to work from to access works on the front of their trains, and offering fall protection above the pit. Handrails on pit boards are not new, we have supplied removable handrails for many years, however at this depot they were being moved and lost, with the outcome that engineers could not use them at all times and, of course, removable is vital as the trains need to pass over them.

 The photographs show the delivered product, designed, manufactured and installed by WAH. In the stowed position they cannot be used, so must be raised, in the raised position the ‘STOP’ signs are visible to drivers, in the stowed position the sign reverts to telling all ‘DO NOT WALK’, as these are work platforms and not crossing points.

We had to ensure that the handrails lowered to a point so that all rolling stock passed over them, a difficult ask but we achieved it, now in use they have been very well received. Another design concept brought to the rail industry and never been seen before, so after many years of supplying this great industry, we continue to innovate.
