The Roman Bathhouse Project 10 years on
 
In 2014 we completed what was our most challenging design and installation at that time and still to this day and 10 years on.
 
The challenge was to design, manufacture and install a floating walkway over the most ancient and protected monument in London, the Roman Bathhouse located many metres below 101 Lower Thames Street in the City. At the time, the remains could not be viewed easily or safely and this led them to stay hidden from the public, however since our involvement starting in 2012 many thousands have had the opportunity to view them but still by appointment only.
 
The Roman remains were uncovered in 1848, as construction workers dug the foundations for what would become the Coal Exchange on Lower Thames Street. At the time, the Illustrated London News hailed it ‘A discovery of the greatest interest to the London antiquary.’ Today, an office block sits atop the ancient ruins. Rediscovered by chance in the mid-19th century, these are the ruins of a private house and adjoining baths which would have been used by particularly wealthy inhabitants of Londinium (London). Bathers would have acclimatised to the heat in the tepidarium before moving to the caldarium where they would be massaged with perfumed oils.
