Why Protecting the Workforce at Height Is So Important
13th May 2025
Protecting workers at height is absolutely vital because falls remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in the workplace. Working at height includes any task where a person could fall and injure themselves, whether from a ladder, scaffolding, platform, or even a relatively low level such as a step or vehicle.
Critically, injuries aren’t only caused by high-level falls. Even falling from no height at all—simply tripping or slipping at ground level—can result in serious harm. These incidents can lead to:
• Broken bones
• Dislocated joints
• Head injuries or concussion
• Spinal trauma
• Long-term musculoskeletal damage
A trip on a flat surface, particularly around machinery or sharp edges, can be just as dangerous as a fall from several feet up.
When working at height, the risks increase significantly. A fall from just one or two metres can cause life-changing injuries or death. That’s why it’s crucial to have the right protection measures in place, including:
• Proper training
• Standard or bespoke Safe access equipment
• Edge protection
• Thorough risk assessments
In summary, fall protection isn’t just for those working high above the ground. Every level carries risks, and even the smallest oversight can lead to devastating consequences
